Ride on a cable car and enjoy sights of peaks of Kangchenjunga
There are total 5 peaks in Kangchenjunga and out of five; three peaks are on the border between North Sikkim and Nepal. The wonderful panorama of these three peaks would be the target while traveling in the ropeway cable car in Darjeeling. Darjeeling is a hill station in the Indian state of West Bengal and it is at a height of 6700 ft from sea level. It is also known as the queen of hill stations. If you look at this map of West Bengal carefully you will find that Darjeeling is located on the Border of Sikkim, and Kangchenjunga is also in Sikkim as mentioned earlier. That is why the panorama of the Kangchenjunga peaks is possible from Darjeeling as it’s so close to Sikkim. If you look at a bigger map of India, a large portion of the state of West Bengal (where Darjeeling is located) seems to be located below the Indian states of Bihar and Jharkhand but a very narrow portion of West Bengal moves towards the border of Sikkim and that is where Darjeeling is located.
Cable cars as mentioned above are the trolleys (see picture below) that move in air on thick iron ropes from one location to another in hilly areas like Darjeeling and Nainital. For example, to reach a point which is high on a hill, it will take less time by ropeway cable car than by road as by road the distance increases due to zig zag paths in the hills. The starting point of cable car in Darjeeling is Singamari which is 3 km away from Darjeeling Chowk Bazaar.
Important thing to note in Darjeeling is that the cable car here starts from higher point and than go towards the lower point. Higher point is Singamari (7000 ft) and lower point is Singla Bazar (800ft). So you need to first reach Singamari to start with the cable car cruise and in the way you can enjoy the sight seeing of Kangchenjunga peaks and other things like tea gardens (which Darjeeling is most famous for), forests, waterfalls, flowing rivers like Ramman and Little Rangeet and more. To know more about ropeway cable car services you can visit Darjeeling Tourism website. A better view of Himalayan peaks can also be seen from Tiger Hills which is another great travel destination in Darjeeling. Some more tourist attractions in Darjeeling are like Batasia Loop, Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Rock Garden and Ganga Maya Park, Bengal Natural History Museum, Japanese Temple and Peace Pagoda, Observatory Hill and Mahakal Temple etc. To know in details about these tourist attractions please visit Darjeeling Tourism Website. That should help to enjoy holidays in Darjeeling.
How to reach Darjeeling?
The cheapest way to reach Darjeeling from New Delhi is to book a ticket in the train called Dbrt Rajdhani which runs from New Delhi to Jalpaiguri then hire a taxi from Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling. But the train tickets are hard to get as the train is mostly full with advanced bookings. You need to book at least 1-2 months in advance. Best would be to take a flight from New Delhi to Bagdogra and then hire a taxi to reach Darjeeling. If you are an international tourist online booking of flights from New Delhi to Bagdogra is available on trusted sites like makemytrip.com . Hopes that helps.
